If you’re tired of sitting on the sidelines watching everyone else having fun, get yourself to a dance studio, a group class, or find a good online video series and learn ballroom dancing.
Are you too nervous to learn ballroom dancing?
As a new student, your anxiety comes from not knowing what to expect from instructors as they create the dancer you were born to be. Therefore, the fear is that learning to dance will be a painful and embarrassing experience.
On the contrary, it’s not! For one thing, putting yourself in the hands of a professional is the best way to get the job done quickly and safely. It’s a fun and entertaining way to gain more confidence.
As a good social dancer, you’ll be like a boy scout – always prepared for music and dancing.
As a matter of fact, learning ballroom dancing is a great way to fine-tune your social skills. Although initially overwhelming, the feeling of being in control while on the dance floor increases with every lesson.
What if I could wave a magic wand or twitch my nose and instantly make you a great social dancer…
Would you really want that? Sure, that would be cool, but think about what you’d miss:
- The pride you feel when you master a step or movement after trying hard for so long to get it right.
- The smile on your teacher’s face when you dance your newest combination of steps in the right order.
- The high-five from your classmate when the teacher picks you to demonstrate a new step.
- The sense of accomplishment that comes as you learn ballroom dancing.
- Imagine never sitting out a dance at a party. Unless, of course, you want to (and you won’t).
Good, clean fun in a social setting.
An outstanding ballroom dance studio has a sense of camaraderie and fellowship. The dance club consists of people who, just like you, have made the decision to learn ballroom dancing.
All student-dancers are in the same boat, so to speak, and it’s wonderful to meet people and make new friends who share a common interest.
The Curve of Learning
When you begin your lessons there’s a natural progression that you’ll experience. It’s called the Curve of Learning.
As you begin, you’ll be making steady progress until you reach the inevitable plateau. This leads to worry, confusion, and disappointment.
This is where some people quit, but not you! When you have the inner fortitude to push past the plateaus that are a normal part of learning social dancing, you’ll reap the rewards.
You’ll master your dancing knowing that you have the resilience to achieve your goals regardless of what gets in your way.
A memory of a happy student.
A few years ago I was working at a studio that was located next to a popular gym. I’d see people every day lugging their bags into the sweaty gym to get their workout in.
Never saw anyone looking excited about going to the gym.
Contrast that to an image I can’t get out of my mind. A gentleman coming to dance class, shoe bag in hand. And, guess what! He was whistling and twirling his bag.
Clearly looking forward to spending time at the studio. Why wouldn’t he?
He was about to enter a world of lovely people, all happy to see him. He’d spend the next hour or so learning ballroom dancing. He’d be moving around the room with a delightful partner dancing to splendid music.
What a wonderful way to spend an evening. (By the way, he left the same way he arrived, twirling bag and all!)
