Attention Early Birds! Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve is looking for a dedicated volunteer boater to sample water quality in Estero Bay monthly as part of a long-term citizen science program, the Charlotte Harbor Estuaries Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Network. This is a great opportunity to learn about water sampling and contribute to a long-term dataset used by natural resource managers throughout Florida. Requires initial training, sample from their own vessel at sunrise on the first Monday of each month, and attend biannual refresher trainings. ADOPT-A-TREE
In celebration of Florida’s Arbor Day, the Town of Fort Myers Beach will give host an Adopt-a-Tree event. Residents, FMB based business owners and non-profits are eligible to adopt a native tree at no cost. Choose either a Gumbo Limbo or Seagrape tree, each in 7-gallon containers. Trees must be planted within the Town of FMB on private property. A required application and placement guidelines are available on the town’s website: fmbgov.com. Proof of eligibility is required. BOATING SAFETY CLASS
The US Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer a one day Boating Safety Class on SA Jan 18 from 9am to 4pm. Lee County is one of the top recycling counties in the state of Florida. Make sure that what you place in your recycling bin truly belongs there. Don’t be a Wish-cycler! (Someone who tosses questionable items in the recycle bin and hopes they can somehow be recycled.) Don’t toss anything in the bin with food left on it. DO NOT RECYCLE THESE ITEMS IN LEE COUNTY: Plastic bags of any kind with any number on them, wire or plastic hangers, Styrofoam anything, waxed cardboard (ice cream tubs, milk containers, juice boxes), anything with food or dirt on it or greasy pizza boxes (trash the greasy bottom, tear off the clean top and recycle.
