I love meeting new people. One reason is that when I tell them I’m a ballroom dance teacher they get very excited. Quite often I hear, “I’ve always wanted to learn ballroom dancing!” In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who didn’t want to. However, there is sometimes a bit of anxiety about learning to dance.

So, what stops people from taking dance lessons?

Anxiety and fear stops you from ballroom dancing
Don’t be shy, be brave.
Get out there and dance.

It’s fear. Indeed, fear stops you from ballroom dancing. When it comes to dancing, some people are:

  1. …embarrassed that they don’t already know what to do on the ballroom dance floor.
  2. …shy when it comes to meeting new people and making new friends.
  3. …afraid they can’t learn to move to the music.
  4. …convinced they’ll look foolish and have anxiety about learning to dance.
  5. …teased about how they move by a spouse, partner, or friend, making them self-conscious.

Any or all of the above may be your issue when it comes to social dancing.

Here’s the reality from a professional’s point of view.

  1. embarrassed?First and foremost, nobody is a natural dancer.  Hence, you have to be taught.  Therefore, you’re not alone.
  2. shy?   Because this is a social event, you’re gonna have to step out of your comfort zone.   As a matter of fact, you’ll expand your social circle as you meet a bunch of new people who share your interest.
  3. afraid?  It’s normal to have a certain amount of anxiety about learning to dance. The good news is, developing this skill is as simple as walking.  Don’t believe it?  Yup, it’s true!  In short, it’s all about directional movement – forward, back, to the left, to the right.  That’s it, I promise.  Besides, overanalyzing it will complicate your progress.
  4. look foolish?  Fear stops you from ballroom dancing. Put an end to it. Give yourself a chance to cut up and move to the music like you did when you were a kid.  Isn’t it true that the little ones are totally relaxed when it comes to shaking their booties?  In reality, most people aren’t judging you.  They’re more concerned with how they look than how you look.
  5. self-conscious?  And, finally, don’t listen to anybody who makes you feel like you don’t have the ability to do this. Don’t let other’s comments increase your anxiety about learning to dance. Forget about what they say and let your teachers do their job.

Check out this video, “Babies Dancing in Diapers”.  Too cute.

So there you have it.  Now that you know what’s stopping you from learning how to dance, let’s fix this.

Be a superhero and don't let fear stop you from learning to dance
Superheros aren’t afraid
to learn how to dance.

To this end, I have a suggestion.  Put on your superhero cape and read this Dance Safari post, “How to Check Out a Ballroom Dance Studio“.  I like this quote, “Take more chances, dance more dances”.  Why not?
